There are many patterns in photos, if you just look for them. They are everywhere. I have found that patterns tend to be more pronounced in black & white photos than in color.

Take for example the photo of the Cannons at Vicksburg. In black & white they are dramatic, but in color, there are not much to see. Farmers’ markets give you lots of ideas for patterns. At the farmers’ market in Memphis the pattern of the tomatoes is more pronounced in black & white than it would be in color, although in color it is interesting too.

A walkway to the beach at Pensacola Beach, FL provides an array of patterns in the late afternoon light. Without the shadows of the railing, it would not be as dramatic. It is a neat photograph in color too.

Move around and let the light provide the best patterns that are possible and then crop your photograph to maximize the patterns.

These photos were all taken in September of 2010.
