Sailing Into The Sunset
There are times you take a very good photograph but do not know it until see the finished results. This photograph is one of those events. Our daughter from Chicago was visiting and as we do with all visitors we headed out to Pensacola Beach later in the afternoon. As we sat up our chairs we watched two motorized parasailers flew be out over the gulf and disappeared down the beach. Florida is known for its beautiful sunsets and this evening was going to be one of them as we sat enjoying the cooling gulf breezes on a hot day. The setting sun went behind the clouds as one parasailer came...

These decorative brooms welcomed visitors to the recent National Cornbread Festival at South Pittsburg, TN, near Chattanooga. I am showing four versions as the “Photo of The Week” and would admit that the color ones are more interesting that the black and white ones. I thought they were really neat and added a smile on your face as you entered the festival grounds. I moved up to the brooms as I close as could to bring out the detail. Enjoy. To see more of the festival go to my blog for some shots of “pickin’ and jammin.” Share this:...
Read MoreFisherman on Pier
I have seen a lot of fishermen on piers, but this guy was on one of most narrow piers I have ever seen. A step in the wrong direction and he would be taking a salt water bath. It was a windy day in Fairhope, AL and this man was trying to put fresh bait on his hook. The back lighting of the scene and the reflections of the sun on the waves makes for an interesting composition. Share this:...
Read More50 Years Between Scenes
This week’s “Photo of the Week” is a bit different. One you have seen here before, the other you have not. Here are two scenes of Times Square at night taken from almost the same spot, but taken 50 years apart. The first scene was taken in the late autumn of 1958….the second in July of 2008. What a difference! In the first photograph I was standing a bit to the left on the intersection of 42nd Street and Broadway in Times Square. In 2008 I was more in the center of the intersection. Of course they were taken with two different cameras: the first with a twin...
Read MoreBlack & White
This week “photo of the week” shows the power of black and white over color, or so I think. This is the doorway to Mission San Juan in in San Antonio, TX. Black and white brings out a lot detail that is not visible to the naked eye in color…or in a color photograph, While the color photo is interesting, it does not have the impact of the black and white. Originally founded in 1716 in eastern Texas, Mission San Juan was transferred in 1731 to its present location. In 1756, the stone church, a friary, and a granary were completed. A larger church was begun, but was abandoned...
Read MoreThe Beal Street Blues
Beal Street in Memphis is the home of the blues. I captured this photo on Beal Street in Memphis last fall while wrapping up the shooting of the Mississippi River project. This musician was on Beal Street in a one location the night before, but when we went down there the next day he had moved a cross the street. He might know something about traffic patterns, I don’t know. Anyway, this was one of five photographs I took of him and I considered this one best. He was putting a lot of “omph” into the music when I captured this scene. That “thing” in front of him...
