Patterns in Photography
There are many patterns in photos, if you just look for them. They are everywhere. I have found that patterns tend to be more pronounced in black & white photos than in color. Take for example the photo of the Cannons at Vicksburg. In black & white they are dramatic, but in color, there are not much to see. Farmers’ markets give you lots of ideas for patterns. At the farmers’ market in Memphis the pattern of the tomatoes is more pronounced in black & white than it would be in color, although in color it is interesting too. A walkway to the beach at Pensacola Beach, FL...
Read MorePhotography is About Light
Everything about photography is about light. We can really say that photography IS LIGHT. Whether is morning, noon or evening, sunny, cloudy or storming, it is the light that either makes or breaks a good photograph. It is about how you use the light to your best advantage. Those of you who have known me for a long time know that I love dark and white areas in my photography and I especially like silhouettes. (More about those in another blog). A low morning or evening light will give more depth, in most cases, than a sun at high noon. But that can be debated too. The photograph with this...
Read MoreWhen is Enough…Enough??
The question is when do you stop shooting a particular scene? As you know I am not an advocate of over shooting, but you also do the opposite of not doing enough if the you have time to do it. In this blog, I have taken several photos of the St. Charles Streetcar in New Orleans. The first one was from quite a ways away…the next was closer..and the final was closer yet. We lose some of the street “scene” with the closeup view but it show more of the streetcar that the mid range view. It is all in the eyes of the beholder. I think I like the mid view best and my second choice is...
Read MoreYou Don’t Need a Bright Light
Don’t let anyone tell you that the sun needs to shine to get the best photographs. You can get exciting photographs are cloudy days, raining days and even after the sun has gone down…or before the sun comes…and at night too. You just need to use your imagination a bit..that is all. Some of my best shots have been taken on cloudy, overcast days when I was waiting for the sun to come out. Even on dark dismal days you dismal days you can still get some pretty good shots. For example, we were in North Carolina looking old grist miss. A lady at a visitor’s bureau told about...
Read MoreDo Not Let Life Slip Away
In this modern age of instant gratification whether it be something we buy on impulse with a credit card or a digital photograph we take and see instantly, life passes us by quickly and we tend to forget those things we thought were important a few minutes ago. While this blog is intended to improve your photographic abilities, I just want to take a few minutes here to remind you to grasp and keep those things that are important to you right now. How often do we look at “old pictures” found in trunks, shoe boxes and envelopes that were taken 50-75 or maybe even 100 years...
Read MoreVenice, La
Normally this blog is about creative photography but I am going to deviate a bit this time with the oil rig crisis in the gulf. We were down to Venice, LA in early April as I was shooting more photographs for my Mississippi River Gallery. Right now Venice is the center of the news concerning the oil and the impending disaster. Venice is at the end of the river where the dikes end and the river waters meet the gulf waters. What I expected to find were ocean liners going up river to New Orleans and Baton Rouge. What we found instead was a community of shrimp boats and fishermen..and yes a lot...
