Use Shadows for Depth
Shadows will help create depth in your photograph. This is one reason why many people will tell you that early to mid morning and mid afternoon to late afternoon will provide better lighting is the fact these times of the day will provide “longer shadows.” In other works these shadows will give you more of a three dimensional feel to the photograph. This is true in most cases. The shadows will provide more of a “side lighting” as well. By moving around your subject, you can find the best angles for this lighting. In the photograph “Autumn Weed,” the lighting and shadows...
Read MoreThe Perfect Photograph
We all want to travel a thousand or ten thousand miles away to get the perfect photograph because there just are not any good photographs in our neighborhoods. So, the thinking goes anyway. If only I was in Germany, or Japan or maybe Australia, or some far off land..there I would find the perfect photo opportunities. Here is a project for you…if you want to go out and take some good photographs…or if you just want to take a short drive and observe what is around your home. A photographer friend of mine said that he took a map, drew a circle five miles from his home and...
Read MoreYou Never Know What is Around the Next Corner
You never know what is around the next corner…and that relates to photography and life in general. Let me give you a couple examples. We were traveling along highway 61 from Natchez to Vicksburg, MS following the river the best we could. Our goal was to get to Vicksburg that evening and later in the week, Memphis. Driving slowly through Port Gibson my wife suddenly said, “Look over there!” I looked to the left and here was this beautiful old courthouse at the end of the street up a small hill. I immediately make a U turn and parked near the old courthouse. The late afternoon sun...
Read MoreSilhouettes Are My Favorite
People who have known me for a while also know that silhouettes are my favorite type of photographs. Forgive me for this longer than normal blog and more photos than normal. Go to my galleries and you see various kinds of silhouettes. Whether it is a tree, or a person or a boat, silhouettes make dramatic photographics and they are easy to take. Basically a silhouette is a photograph shooting into the sun…or a light, but the subject is blocking the light source. I feel that silhouettes make the photograph more dramatic and they really stand out in a album or an exhibit. Silhouettes...
Read MorePatterns in Photography
There are many patterns in photos, if you just look for them. They are everywhere. I have found that patterns tend to be more pronounced in black & white photos than in color. Take for example the photo of the Cannons at Vicksburg. In black & white they are dramatic, but in color, there are not much to see. Farmers’ markets give you lots of ideas for patterns. At the farmers’ market in Memphis the pattern of the tomatoes is more pronounced in black & white than it would be in color, although in color it is interesting too. A walkway to the beach at Pensacola Beach, FL...
Read MorePhotography is About Light
Everything about photography is about light. We can really say that photography IS LIGHT. Whether is morning, noon or evening, sunny, cloudy or storming, it is the light that either makes or breaks a good photograph. It is about how you use the light to your best advantage. Those of you who have known me for a long time know that I love dark and white areas in my photography and I especially like silhouettes. (More about those in another blog). A low morning or evening light will give more depth, in most cases, than a sun at high noon. But that can be debated too. The photograph with this...
