Bayou LaBatre, the heart of Alabama’s shrimping industry, ws divisasted by Hurricane Katrina in September of 2005. It was one the deadliest storms in the history of the country. Most of the shrimp boats were tossed around like corks on a stormy ocean and sunk, ended up tossed up on shore or were badly damaged. I visited Bayou Labatre several times before the storm and several times afterwards…and on January 15, 2010. This week’s Photo of the Week is several that were taken that day. It shows one group of shrimp boats still anchored in the harbor…fewer than before the hurricane. It is an interesting area only a half hour below Mobile. It is turning into a smaller shrimping industry and more into ship building. The area has been all cleaned up and there is hardly any evidence of the terrible storm. Life goes on.
