One of the bad things about most digital cameras is that they lend themselves to taking horizontal photographs.  With many medium format film camera, mine included, I end up with a square negative that allows  me crop the finished photograph, horizontal, vertical or square For most of my “photography life” I have either printed my photographs in a vertical or horizontal format. Keep it Level

One of the hardest problems I have in taking good photographs, especially landscapes, is to keeping the camera level. When you are taking landscapes it should be easy to be sure that the skyline in level, but for some reason it does not always happen.  If you do not have a skyline, try to find something  in the view finder and use that as a guide. Falls Mill

  Sometimes the lighting will never work out right for you until you take a look at the results. At a gallery night in Pensacola recently a person told me about this mill in Tennessee near the Jack Daniels distillery. After talking to the tourist welcome center in Tennessee and a shop keeper near Jack Daniels we found the location of the mill near Maxwell which is between Fayetteville and Winchester, TN. Then we found the mill but I wanted to wait for an afternoon sun for better lighting.. We went to a local  “down home ”restaurant for the noon plate special and returned to the mill....

Get The Right Perspective

When you have discovered a scene..or a thing..or a person you want to photograph, take your time, if you can, getting the right angle…or perspective. Do you want a low or a high angle?  Take your time if you can… to decide which angle you want. The beauty of the digital camera is that you can shoot as many different angles you want, see what you have, and delete them if you wish. We with film cameras have to take more time to decide which angle  we want…and them maybe take one or two photos of each angle. Mississippi River Clam Digger

  Muscatine, Iowa was the pearl button capitol of the world. A German immigrant started the fresh water clam button business back in the 1880s. Within ten years the Pearl City (Muscatine) became the largest manufacturer of fresh-water pearl buttons in the world. In 1898 Iowa turned out 138,615,696 buttons! This statue along the shores of the Mississippi River honor the pearl button industry. You can see the main channel of the river in the background.
