Old Mill Wheel

This old mill wheel in southern Tennessee is framed by two trees and the dark leaves of the plants in the foreground. The scene lends itself best to a vertical photograph. The water from the mill’s race on the right adds a bit more light to the scene. The light brick of the mill brings your eyes to the mill wheel itself. This is a working mill. Photo taken June, 2009. Vertical, Horizontal or Square

One of the bad things about most digital cameras is that they lend themselves to taking horizontal photographs.  With many medium format film camera, mine included, I end up with a square negative that allows  me crop the finished photograph, horizontal, vertical or square For most of my “photography life” I have either printed my photographs in a vertical or horizontal format.
